Hornets lose away to Chelmsford City 3-0. Some Debenham players found the robust approach of the the Clarets difficult
to deal with, whilst others met the challenge head on. The Essex side were big and physical, and looked most dangerous from
set pieces. The visitors lost Jack Smith early on, following a clash of heads. (Went to hospital with double vision, but is
okay).
City led 1-0 at the break, following a corner, and a weak shot that crept in. Robert Brunning left the field early in
the second half, with a knee injury.
Hornets looked for an equaliser, but were caught on the break, mid-way through the second period. The third came towards
the end, following another corner.
Despite the defeat, the Hornets played some good football at times, but too often gave the ball away.
The Home side were physically too strong in certain areas of the park.
There were some brave performances, particularly from Albo and Tim Bowers, Ryan Stafford and Reece Turner.

NEWMARKET TOWN 4 DEBENHAM LC 2
DEBENHAM LC's under-18s went from heroes to zeroes as they slumped to a 4-2 defeat away to Newmarket Town. The visitors got
off to a disastrous start and found themselves 3-0 down after 30 minutes. Chances went begging at the other end but the scoreline
stayed the same going into the break. It went from bad to worse a minute after the
break when the home side made it 4-0. Debenham managed to launch a mini-revival and Nathan Smith added two to
his tally for the season. The Hornets continued to attack with Liam Moss and Jon Chick going close, but they could not claw
the game back. Debenham: Clements, Stafford,

DEBENHAM LC 1 STANWAY ROVERS 0
DEBENHAM LC notched up an impressive 1-0 triumph against top-of-the-table Stanway Rovers. The victory was made all the more
memorable because Nathan Smith's winning goal came in the last minute of normal time. It didn't tell the full story because
the Suffolk side - who only had 12 players available - could have wrapped up the three points long before the final whistle.
The visitors keeper made four top-drawer saves to keep the league leaders in the game.
Late in the first half, he clawed away Liam Moss' effort from a yard out after the striker had rattled the bar with a header
and was first to the rebound. After the break he palmed Tim Bowers' near post drive over the bar and turned Nathan Smith's
effort wide with his fingertips when one-on-one. The pick of the bunch was a reaction save to Jon Chick's venomous close-range
volley which he somehow helped over the bar. Debenham would've been forgiven for thinking it wasn't their day but late in
the game Josh Luxford's right-wing cross found Nathan Smith unmarked in the box. He took a touch and slid the ball under the
keeper and into the net. The home side's keeper, Sephy Clements, had a quieter 90 minutes than his counterpart.
Despite periods of possession from the Essex side, Debenham's back four, in particular centre-backs Albo Bowers and Jack Hemmings-Smith,
restricted them to long-range efforts. The three points puts Debenham into sixth spot.

Ingilby Cup - Quater Finals
DEBENHAM LC 2 WALTHAM ABBEY 4
DEBENHAM threw away a two-goal lead and crashed out of the Ingilby Cup at the quarter-final stage with a 4-2 defeat against
Waltham Abbey. A wonder-goal from Liam Moss, his first for the club, and a sublime finish from Josh Luxford put the Hornets
2-0 up with 48 minutes on the
clock. But they couldn't hang on. They switched off and conceded just 30 seconds after scoring the second goal.
And worse was to follow when the whole team was caught too deep and couldn't defend two straight-forward crosses. A goal in
the closing stages sealed the Herfordshire side's passage into the last four. The first half was an even affair with the visitor's
keeper thwarting Jack
Hemmings-Smith from close-range and palming away Reece Turner's drive. Waltham edged the first 45 minutes on possession but
failed to trouble Sephy Clements from long range. It took something special to break the
deadlock. Moss took down a bouncing ball 25 yards out on the left-flank, turned inside and sent a looping, swerving volley
over the keeper and into the net.The former Framlingham striker played a key role in the Hornets' second. He flicked on a
clearance and Luxford raced on and lobbed the onrushing keeper. But the Hornets couldn't hang on found themselves 3-2 down
with 10 minutes
to go.Tommy Smith and sub Zak Towers both came close but Waltham got the crucial goal to complete their comeback.

Open Cup
DEBENHAM LC 3 NEEDHAM MARKET 1 (agg 6-2)
DEBENHAM cruised into the final of the Suffolk Open Cup with a 3-1 win against Needham Market. It was the second time in eight
days the Hornets had beaten their mid Suffolk neighbours to make the aggregate score 6-2. The home side, who had the luxury
of resting Ryan Stafford and Jon Chick, were playing against a strong wind in the first half but still took a 1-0 lead into
the break. Midas Betterton was felled in the box after he was set free by Nathan Smith and Ainsley Hope made no mistake from
the penalty spot, striking home low to the keeper's left. Sephy Clements was called into one first-half save, palming away
a stinging shot from 18 yards, but the Hornets were rarely stretched.
They took control after the break with two clinical finishes from Nathan Smith putting the tie out of Needham's reach. Debenham
should have added more as marauding right-back Josh Luxford tested the keeper twice, Reece Turner spurned a one-on-one, Tim
Bowers put too much on a cross with the goal gaping and Nathan Smith failed to chip the stranded keeper from 25 yards. The
visitors netted a consolation when their own Nathan Smith volleyed home from the edge of the box.

Open Cup
Needham Market 1 Debenham LC 3
DEBENHAM gained the upper-hand in the first leg of the Suffolk Open Cup semi-final with a 3-1 win away to Needham. Second
half goals from Josh Luxford, Jack Hemmings-Smith and Reece Turner put the Hornets in the driving seat. Wasteful finishing
and a late penalty from the hosts kept the score respectable in a match the visitors dominated. Debenham ran riot in the first
half but failed to break the deadlock. Hemmings-Smith struck the bar in the second minute, Liam Moss missed two close-range
chances and had an effort ruled out for deliberate handball, Midas Betterton hit the post and Nathan Smith couldn't take advantage
of a
one-on-one. Half-time substitute Luxford made the all-important breakthrough. His first shot was blocked on the edge of the
box but rolled the rebound into the empty net. Hemmings-Smith made it two after a flowing move
involving Tim Bowers, Betterton and Turner. Turner made it three with a scrambled effort after Darren Atkins had
poked Jon Chick's corner goalwards. Needham reduced the arrears in injury-time after Ryan Stafford's ill-timed
challenge in the box.

DEBENHAM LC 2 BURY TOWN 4
An embarrassing second-half capitulation saw Debenham turn a 2-0 lead into a 4-2 defeat. Goals from Jon Chick and Reece Turner
were a just reward for a first-half
display full of discipline and spirit. Ainsley Hope could have made it three with a far post header that flew
narrowly over and Chris Stacey's finger-tips stopped Ryan Stafford adding to the score with a 20-yard free-kick. But the good
work was undone after the break. Jack Hemmings-Smith replaced Alex Bowers (injured) at half time.
With just two minutes gone in the second period, Bury's Ben Licence was allowed to overlap down the right and his cross was
bundled home. Craig Nurse made it 2-2 from the
penalty spot after Jack Hemmings-Smith mis-timed lunge five minutes later. Nurse went from hero to zero midway through the
half when he picked up a second yellow card. But the young Hornets failed to make the most of the lifeline.
This time Darren Atkins went to ground in the box and conceded a penalty which was duly dispatched by Zak Shaw. The visitors
added a fourth after poor marking from a left-wing throw-in allowed them a clear route to goal. Debenham's Liam Moss spurned
two presentable chances and Stafford came close with another free-kick, but there was no way back for the hosts.

DEBENHAM LC 3 WINGATE & FINCHLEY 0
An uninspiring Debenham LC under-18s progressed to the quarter finals of the Ingilby cup with a 3-0 win against Wingate &
Finchley.Goals from Ainsley Hope, Reece Turner and Nathan Smith were enough to see off the north London side who only travelled
to Suffolk with 10 players. The hosts made hard work of the opening stages of the scrappy
cup tie and failed to produce any flowing football. The efforts of Tommy Smith and Tim Bowers in centre midfield stood out
among an otherwise lacklustre home side.Debenham were gifted an opener on 30 minutes when Midas Betterton's
free-kick was handled in the box.Hope converted the spot-kick with expert precision low to the keeper's left.
Turner doubled the scoring with a brave lunge to beat the keeper to the ball just before the break. The dreary pattern of play
continued in the second half with Wingate
showing some nice touches without finding a cutting edge and Debenham with fewer nice touches and even less cutting edge.Substitute
Liam Moss spurned a hat-trick of chances, Darren Atkins had an effort cleared off the line and Nathan Smith nearly capped
the best move of the game with a goal but couldn't find enough elevation on his toe-poked volley. The home side completed
the scoring in the 85th minute when Nathan Smith tapped in from two yards after Ryan Stafford's corner caused panic in the
box.
It was only the second game since the middle of December and it showed.
